How difficult it is to talk about what we care about most. How often at a dinner among friends the conversation is always kept at the level of trivialities, and not because there are superficial people at the table. It is modesty that holds us all back from exposing our thoughts (and thus our being) on fundamental topics. Perhaps because of an atavistic feeling of vulnerability and the instinct to guard against it. So that at the end of the dinner many get up with a sense of incompleteness: another wasted opportunity. Perhaps everyone feels it, but no one says it. There is a perimeter of permissible topics in ordinary human relations whose boundaries are difficult to cross.
